One of the fastest growing entertainment genres in the US is pornography. Porn movies, adult movies, or even sex videos are all movies that present sexually suggestive subject matter in an attempt to arouse and titillate the audience. Pornographic movies typically contain sexually arousing content like nudity and sometimes even sexual intercourse and often include sexually provocative imagery. In some cases, explicit content is not included in a porn movie for one reason or another. It could be that the movie company thinks it would be offensive to have sexual innuendo interwoven into their pornographic film.
Recently there has been a heated debate about pornography and the way it affects society. Some people believe that pornography has a negative effect on society because it destroys family values and interpersonal relationships. On the other hand, other people feel that pornography is a harmless form of expression that should not be limited or banned. With the increasing availability of high-definition format video on the Internet, the public has more access to porn than ever before. This increase in public exposure to pornography has raised many questions about the impact of pornography on society. Is watching pornography at work damaging the family unit and the sexual health of employees?
The impact of pornography on society has not been adequately studied yet. However, some studies have found that there is a link between pornography and sexual harassment. For instance, in a recent study by the National Institute of Justice, researchers found that there is a significant link between the number of states enacting serious limits on obscenity and the incidence of sexual harassment in the workplace. They further determined that there is a correlation between states with laws that implement severe penalties for illegal sexual exposure and the incidence of sexual harassment. There are also some concerns that the escalating cost of copyright protection may be having an effect on the amount of pornography being produced and available on the Internet. In a recent study by the Canadian Women’s Library, there was a correlation found between increased rates of pornography and a decreased rate of sexual violence against women.
There is much debate as to whether or not pornography is even considered as a “real” sex act. Some people argue that pornography, because it lacks consent and emotional involvement, lacks the sexual stimulation and connection that true sexual intimacy and love could provide. Pornography may not necessarily cause harm to sexuality and the libido but may actually contribute to negative sexual health outcomes, such as low self-esteem, poor sexual function and increased risk of sexual violence. Pornography can be used as a tool that may heighten the experience of sexual arousal and may lead to unwanted sexual experiences. This can translate into unwanted sex and assault.
According to California Civil Code Section 1366, “the production of any obscene material is presumed to cause lascivious and offensive exposure of the contents of the material to the public.” The state of California is known for its free-speech laws. The mere printing or displaying of any type of obscene matter, and regardless of whether the publishing or displaying took place in public or private place does not have to be held in disregard of the First Amendment. However, the state of California recognizes that people have a reasonable concern when they are exposed to any material that may cause them to develop a taste for obscene sexual conduct. Additionally, California law has implemented an anti-obscenity law that prohibits the use of actual human genitalia or minors engaged in explicit sexual conduct within the confines of a movie theater, television studio, cinema, or other location that allow anyone to view these materials.
As we have noted above, pornography and sexual behavior are not always associated. Prostitution refers to the exchange of sexual favors for money or other services. The term itself, and variations such as ‘adult films’ and ‘adult pornography’ do not refer to sexual behavior, but to the industry that caters to this sexual activity. Although, technically, any sexual contact between two adults does not constitute prostitution, some jurisdictions have historically defined the legal association between prostitution and sex as including all instances in which sexual activity was willingly performed by one person with another in exchange for money or other services.
Pornography have been linked in a causal relationship, that the World Health Organization attributes to escalating cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the past few years. There is a strong correlation between poverty and the prevalence of STDs, as well as the accessibility of pornography in the home. Pornographic images are often accessed by those who cannot afford the STD treatment that they need due to economic factors, such as prostitution. When a porn addiction is present, it can lead to serious complications in the areas of family planning and pregnancy. Not only is a lack of sexual activity harmful to one’s relationship and personal happiness, it can also be detrimental to the health of a child.
The main article in this series, which will be published every week, tackles the controversial issue of the effect that pornography has on sexual violence in society today. This series seeks to shine a light on the negative repercussions that porn has on society, especially youth, who may be influenced by pornographic films at a young age and act upon violent and suggestive behavior when they become adults. Many argue that there is absolutely nothing wrong about pornography being viewed, as the majority of people do not view it negatively. Others argue that viewing pornography at inappropriate times may have a devastating affect on a person’s life.
